National Adoption Week 2026

Coram is celebrating this year’s National Adoption Week through a rich programme of activity, from a photo portrait series in collaboration with award winning photographer Richard Ansett to new events and research.

Coram’s latest research shows there are currently:

2,970

children with adoption placement orders waiting in care for an adoptive family

Only 1,350

approved adopters available

Around 650,000

people say they are very likely to or definitely will adopt within the next three years.

If just 1% of these 650,000 people were to register for adoption, there would be more adopters than children waiting to be adopted.

Toolkit for adopted people

Young people from Coram’s Voices in Action programme have produced a new guide sharing their own experience of adoption and providing tools and resources for younger adoptees to explore their identity and belonging. The toolkit includes blank pages to fill with your own adoption story.

“People might not always understand exactly how it feels, but they can listen, recognise the impact adoption can have, and take what adopted young people say seriously.”

Next of Kin: A Portrait of Adoptive Families by Richard Ansett

Drawing on his own experience of adoption, award winning photographer Richard Ansett has created a series of intimate portraits that explore the deeply personal stories of those he considers his ‘tribe’.

For this project, Richard has worked with some of the families and children we support. Travelling across the country, he has captured a collection of thoughtful and deeply personal portraits which reflect the experiences and stories at the heart of adoption.

You can view the full series of images online and watch a behind-the-scenes documentary with Richard on the Adoption Story website. You will also be able to explore the timeline of adoption and stories shared by those who have been touched by adoption over the century.

Not only a celebration for National Adoption Week 2026, the images are also being used in an eye-catching outdoor advertising campaign across London to encourage more people to take the next step towards adoption. The campaign focuses on beginning your adoption journey and the theme of belonging.

“This project is by a child of adoption seeing myself in the faces of the young people negotiating with a shared sense of displacement and unconditional love that is unique to our experience. The power of the images – I hope – is in the celebration of adoption as something wonderfully ordinary and perhaps possible to imagine in the minds of future parents.”
